“For sheer gluggability and hedonistic pleasure we loved this wine. Young it may be; straightforward it may be; unwooded, too; but it’s an object lesson in how to produce a delicious fruit-driven young red.”
Rating 90 A very enjoyable early-drinking red which is soft, round and balanced, with no excess of oak, tannin or alcohol - the grapes do the talking. Touches of jam and gun-smoke. Remarkably good drinking for such a youngster.
MT stands for ‘minha terra’, an expression Portuguese vignerons use to describe their individual plots of vineyard, reflecting Dominic and Krystina Morris’s experience making wine in Portugal. The ‘terra’ in question here is their Pondalowie vineyard, near Bendigo.

A more-ish young wine, more successful than just about any Aussie tempranillo’s we’ve tasted. The colour is bright and youthful, and the nose has appetising aromas suggesting fleshy dark cherries and licorice. The makers see cola and sarsaparilla as well and we won’t argue - it certainly is different. The medium-weight palate is smooth with ripe falvours in a savoury ‘euro’ fashion. Drink it young with jamon and vegetable pastries.
This gorgeous, generous, warm-hearted red is arguably the truest varietal Australian expression yet of the great Spanish red grape; plush, blackcherry richness floods the mouth, lifted by an alluring, spiced fruit cake complexity. Delicious now - but also worth cellaring for a couple of years.
A lovely fruity, unwooded, early-drinking Tempranillo from an exciting young winery. Not only is it a lovely drink in its youth, it displays Tempranillo fruit unadorned, in all its glory.
"I put the distinctive, spicy Aussie 2005 Pondalowie MT Tempranillo through its paces with lamb chops, and its concentrated dark-cherry and plum fruitiness worked a treat.
In her final instalment Jane MacQuitty pushes the boat out a lttle to bring you a glorious selection of 25 top-drawer wines for under £20 "Spain's plummy tempranillo grape is a terrific new addition to Australia's run of red wines, delivering some wonderful flavours and fruit. This elegant, scented, rose and blackcurrant pastille-licked red, with plenty of bright vibrant fruit is a case in point.
"An unwooded example of this famous Spanish grape and full of vibrancy. Mid-weight and perfect for youthful drinking.
If your lover is a red lover, surprise them with this on Valentine's Day. Tempranillo is Spain's gift the wine buffs and it's still new to Australian vineyards, and tables. The Morrises of Pondalowie make on of our best, full of interesting, unexpected flavours. A great match with food.
Plantings of the Spanish grape tempranillo are growing rapidly in Australia. Pondalowie, near Bendigo, makes some of the most exciting versions. The MT has fragrant dark berry fruit and a supple and juicy palate. Serve slightly chilled with tapas.
Winemakers Dominic and Krystina Morris are very skilled with lateral varieties such as Tempranillo. This vibrant, jubey example is a real taste of Spain with its pure aromas and flavours of dark cherry, plum and sarsparilla.

I thought I had the latest release with the 04MT, but those clever people at Pondalowie have already put out the 05 MT. Of course I had to have a look at it straight away…Quite different in style to the 04, a lot less of the cola/sarsaparilla aspects but beautiful, silky tannins that give the wine a great texture. I'm not sure if the change is a stylistic change in the vineyard/winery or just vintage variation. Dark red fruits on the nose, herbs and spice with a bit of funk. Great texture and weight in the mouth with blackberry, dark cherry and a hint of pepper and spice. Quite a long finish. I don't see a lot of acid here, but the great tannins are the main attraction. Different, but still very good.
Lovely vivid, pure fruit here. Juicy, rich, sweet red fruits dominate. Nice stuff and quite accessible. Very good!
